Különszám a Restoration Ecology hasábjain

A kötet cikkei a következő várhatóan néhány hétben, hónapban mindenki számára szabadon hozzáférhetőek lesznek a folyóirat honlapján. A kötet tartalma az alábbiakban olvasható.

Seed dispersal and soil seed banks - Promising sources for ecological restoration

Török P., Helm A., Kiehl K., Buisson E., Valkó O.

Species dispersal, establishment, and assembly are crucial stages of the life history of plants, and clear understanding of the governing forces and rules that shape species composition in a particular community is vital for successful ecological restoration. In this article, we focus on five aspects of seed dispersal and plant establishment, which should be considered during habitat restoration actions. In the first two sections, we discuss the success of spontaneous dispersal and establishment on restoration based on either spatial dispersal or local seed banks. In the third section, we assess the possibilities of species introduction and assisted dispersal. In the fourth section, we introduce some possibilities for the improvement of establishment success of spontaneously dispersed or introduced species. Finally, we highlight issues influencing long‐term persistence and sustainability of restored habitats, related to the alteration of management type and intensity, climate change, and spread of non‐native species. With the present article, we introduce the special issue entitled “Seed dispersal and soil seed banks – promising sources for ecological restoration” containing 15 papers by 62 authors from 10 countries arranged in the abovementioned five topics.

MTA Környezetvédelmi Tudományos Ifjúsági Pályadíj

A Magyar Tudományos Akadémia – a Környezetvédelmi Tudományos Ifjúsági Pályadíj Kuratóriuma javaslata alapján – a környezetvédelmi világnaphoz kapcsolódva, a tudományos élet területén dolgozó fiatal kutatók eredményeinek elismerésére létrehozott Környezetvédelmi Tudományos Ifjúsági Pályadíjban részesítette Dr. Tóth Edinát, az MTA-DE Lendület Funkcionális és Restaurációs Ökológiai Kutatócsoport tudományos segédmunkatársát.

A kutatócsoport minden munkatársa nevében szívből gratulálok ehhez az elismeréshez!

A részletes indoklás az akadémia honlapján is megjelent: "Tóth Edinát, az MTA-DE Lendület Funkcionális és Restaurációs Ökológiai Kutatócsoport tudományos segédmunkatársát „A legelő állat típusa sokkal fontosabb, mint a legelési intenzitás: hagyományos szarvasmarha- és juhlegeltetés rövid füvű sztyepp vegetációban” című pályamunkájáért, amely a szakma egyik rangos folyóiratában, a Land Degradation and Developmentben 2016-ban megjelent elsőszerzős publikáción alapul. Tóth Edina munkájának kiemelt jelentősége van a konzervációs és restaurációs ökológiai kutatásokban, egyrészt a választott téma időszerűségének, másrészt a kapott eredmények gyakorlati hasznosíthatóságának köszönhetően. Ma a vonatkozó kutatásoknak új, népszerű irányvonalát képviselik a növényi tulajdonság- és jellegalapú vizsgálatok, amelyek segítik a legelés hatására bekövetkező növényzeti változások háttérmechanizmusainak, így közvetve a gyepek biológiai sokféleségére gyakorolt hatásainak megértését. A téma eddigi publikációi szinte kivétel nélkül a legelési intenzitás fontosságát hangsúlyozták a gyepek kezelésének tervezése során, ezért újszerűek Tóth Edina kutatási eredményei, miszerint a legelő állat helyes megválasztása lenne a fontosabb. Publikációjának újító eredményei miatt a közleményre eső SCI-hivatkozásainak száma a szakterület felső 5%-ába esik."

Új cikk kunhalmokról a Landscape Ecology-ban

Megjelent Deák Balázs elsőszerzőségével készült cikkünk a Landscape Ecology hasábjain. A cikk elemzi a helyi és tájképi faktorok fajkészletre és specialista fajokra gyakorolt hatását, összesen 82 eltérő mértékben izolált gyepes kunhalom bevonásával. A cikk összefoglalója az alábbiakban olvasható. A cikk letölthető/elérhető a folyóirat honlapján és hamarosan letölthető lesz a honlapomról is.

Landscape and habitat filters jointly drive richness and abundance of specialist plants in terrestrial habitat islands.

Deák B., Valkó O., Török P., Kelemen A., Bede Á., Csathó A.I., Tóthmérész B.

Landscape and habitat filters are major drivers of biodiversity of small habitat islands by influencing dispersal and extinction events in plant metapopulations. We assessed the effects of landscape and habitat filters on the species richness, abundance and trait composition of grassland specialist and generalist plants in small habitat islands. We studied traits related to functional spatial connectivity (dispersal ability by wind and animals) and temporal connectivity (clonality and seed bank persistence) using model selection. We sampled herbaceous plants, landscape (local and regional isolation) and habitat filters (inclination, woody encroachment and disturbance) in 82 grassland islands in Hungary. Isolation decreased the abundance of good disperser specialist plants due to the lack of directional vectors transferring seeds between suitable habitat patches.

Clonality was an effective strategy, but persistent seed bank did not support the survival of specialist plants in isolated habitats. Generalist plants were unaffected by landscape filters due to their wide habitat breadth and high propagule availability. Clonal specialist plants could cope with increasing woody encroachment due to their high resistance against environmental changes; however, they could not cope with intensive disturbance. Steep slopes providing environmental heterogeneity had an overall positive effect on species richness. Specialist plants were influenced by the interplay of landscape filters influencing their abundance and habitat filters affecting species richness. Landscape filtering by isolation influenced the abundance of specialist plants by regulating seed dispersal. Habitat filters sorted species that could establish and persist at a site by influencing microsite availability and quality.
